A forma bare infinitive pode ser empregue:

1   a seguir a verbos modais (excepto ought to): I must study. Tenho de estudar   You should see a dentist. Deverias ir ao dentista.   He could be at home. É possível que ele esteja em casa.

2   depois do verbo let: Let me go! Larga-me!   Let's go! Vamos!   Let go the handle! Larga a maçaneta!

3   depois do verbo make: She made me do the homework. Ela obrigou-me a fazer os trabalhos de casa.   We have to make do with what we've got. Temos de nos contentar com o que temos.   Our little Tom made his baby sister cry. O nosso pequeno Tom fez a sua irmã bebé chorar.   Contudo, em voz passiva make é seguido de to-infinitive:   He was made to do the washing-up. Ele foi obrigado a lavar a louça.

4   depois do verbo have: Para pormenores veja have+object+infinitive

5   depois dos verbos de percepção (ex. see, watch, hear, etc.): I saw him take the money. Eu vi-o levar o dinheiro.   I watched him climb a tree. Eu vi-o trepar uma árvore.   She heard him swear. Ela ouvi-o praguejar.

6   a seguir a would rather: I'd rather study. Eu preferia estudar.   He'd rather go to the cinema. Ele preferia ir ao cinema.   She'd rather walk. Ela preferia ir a pé.

7   a seguir a had better: You'd better study. É melhor estudares.   You'd better leave now. É melhor saíres já.   You'd better see a doctor. É melhor ires ver um médico.

8   a seguir a rather than: I decided to stay at home and study rather than go out. Decidi ficar em casa e estudar em vez de sair.   Rather than turn himself in, he ran away. Em vez de se entregar à polícia, ele fugiu.

9   a seguir a why e why not: Why do this? Porquê fazer isto?   Why argue with me? Porquê discutir comigo?   Why not stay here? Porque não ficar aqui?
