1   Os seguintes verbos expect, hope, look forward to e wait têm um significado em comum: esperar. Contudo, devido à semelhança semântica entre si, costumam causar, entre os estudantes da língua inglesa, dificuldades quanto à sua utilização.

 

  2   EXPECT significa esperar que alguma coisa venha acontecer, ou contar com alguém que este faça algo:
  • expect + to-infinitive
     
    I expect to win.
    Espero ganhar.
     
    I expect to see you tomorrow.
    Espero ver-te amanhã.
     
  • expect + somebody + to-infinitive
     
    I expect you to win.
    Conto com que tu ganhes.
     
    I expect you to pass the exam.
    Conto com que tu passes no exame.
     
  • expect + (that) + clause
     
    I expect (that) he will pass the exam.
    Espero que ele passe no exame.
     
    I expect (that) she will come to the party.
    Espero que ela venha à festa.

 

  3   HOPE significa esperar desejando:
  • hope + to-infinitive
     
    I hope to see you again.
    Espero ver-te novamente.
     
    I hope to go to Italy next year.
    Espero ir à Itália no próximo mês.
     
  • hope + (that) + clause
     
    I hope (that) she will come to the party.
    Espero que ela venha à festa.
     
    I hope (that) they will understand.
    Espero que eles compreendam.

 

  4   LOOK FORWARD TO significa esperar com antecipado prazer, ou aguardar com prazer:
  • look forward to + something
     
    I am looking forward to the party.
    É com prazer que eu aguardo a festa.
     
    I am really looking forward to our get-together.
    É com prazer que eu aguardo a nossa reunião.
     
  • look forward to + gerund
     
    I look forward to seeing you again.
    É com prazer que eu aguardo ver-te novamente.
     
    I look forward to hearing from you.
    Aguardo notícias vossas.

 

  5   WAIT significa esperar, estar à espera de, ou aguardar. Sugere horário planeado ou acção planeada:
  • wait + to-infinitive
     
    I am waiting to see the doctor.
    Estou à espera do médico.
     
    I am waiting to have a word with him.
    Estou à espera para falar com ele.
     
  • wait + for + somebody/something
     
    I am waiting for you.
    Estou à espera de ti.
     
    I am waiting for the train.
    Estou à espera do comboio.
     
  • wait + for + somebody/something + to-infinitive
     
    I am waiting for you to finish.
    Estou à espera que acabes.
     
    I am waiting for the bus to arrive.
    Estou à espera que o autocarro chegue.
